Our Exotic Past

I’ve always found it strange how dominant cultures tend to fetishise the traditions of others, whilst either ignoring that such things were once common to all cultures, including currently ‘modernised’ ones, or looking askance at the fact that such things happened here too. Case in point, the familiarity with death as exemplified by the photographs here. The sentiment behind it is much the same as traditions like Dia de Muertos, yet which is the exoticised and which is the derided?
